Serve your patients better by protecting their health information. Minimize the risk of breach.
Theft of patient medical records and personal information is on the rise. On April 8, 2014 the FBI posted a bulletin citing that a patient’s record can be worth as much as $50 on the black market, while a credit card or social security number is valued around $1! Health Information is being recognized as a valuable commodity on the black market and recent news has unveiled the susceptibility of health organizations to breaches, sometimes resulting in severe penalties. Institutions are being audited and coming under increasing scrutiny to have in place robust Risk Assessments to reduce their liability.
With the increased threat to patient confidentiality, it is imperative providers and hospitals do all they can to protect their patients. Current conditions show a rise in targeted breaches for healthcare information. When a breach occurs, it is detrimental to the hospital’s day to day business and reputation. It disrupts the primary focus of healthcare and brings long lasting harm to patients who are affected by the breach. Therefore, it is very important for healthcare institutions to not only focus on patient healthcare needs, but also address the rising risk in protecting patient health information.
Along with the exhaustive corrective actions that will be required following a breach, the breached organization may be greatly impacted financially. Penalties for a given breach can be as high as $50,000 USD per record. For more information on the penalty structure and amounts, see the HITECH rule.
